We begin our journey just outside Calgary, in Chestermere, where the bride still resides in the morning of the wedding.  The founder of Sikhism, and the first of the ten Sikh gurus, oversees all the preparations:  Suman is now ready to say 'I do'.  Meanwhile, Raj spends the morning in his hotel room:  With or without the sehra, the groom looks royal.  The white horse can only improve that aspect during the baraat:  Suman's family is waiting for them in front of the gurdwara:  After the milni, everyone is a little hungry and a light breakfast, consisting of everything deep fried, fixes the temporary problem:   With full stomachs, we're ready for the 1 hour long Ceremony of Bliss.  In the balcony, there's someone who is not very happy with the direction things are headed to, but it's too late now:   Suman: "When I first met Raj, I came home and told my sister he was exactly like me. Viren's Lohri Party in Grande Prairie

The Lohri festival marks the last days of winter ... in Punjab, India.  In Alberta, Canada, Lohri is celebrated by anyone who survived the first 6 months of winter and is looking forward to making it through the last 6 months of this magical and only season of the northern prairies. There are many other reasons to enjoy this time of the year, like the landing of Baby Bear:  Or the invention of a new Samsung app for smart phones, the one that helps with teeth growing:  It happens to be Viren's first winter and he rents the Revolution Place in Grande Prairie for a memorable event:  I'm invited and I bring my camera, because that's what I do.  Viren's parents - you may know them from one of the many appearances on this blog - are welcoming everyone:  The bonfire signifies the return of the longer days and it's a key feature of the Lohri:  The silver tray carried by women signifies that the men have to start digging in their pockets:  It could be a d...

Tina & Maneesh - Sikh Hindu Wedding in Toronto

 Maneesh: "I knew I wanted to marry Tina an hour after we met. I love her to the moon and back. Dheere Dheere Se Meri Mein Aana, Dheere Dheere Se Mere Dil Ko Churaana. Tum Se Pyaar Humein Kitna Hai Jaane Jaana, Tumse Milkar Tumko Hai Bataana." If my calculations are correct, at the end of the day, the bride-to-be is going to be left with less than half of those kalires and they will be all over the greater Toronto area.  Meanwhile, Ella is at the groom's home, where a puja (Hindu religious ceremony) is about to take place:  The ritual ends with the donning of the turban:  The first wedding ceremony is the Anand Karaj - Blissful Union, so everybody heads to Gurdwara Sahib on Rivalda Road:  Joyful and animated, the baraat is slowly approaching.  The lobby is hosting a short welcoming ardas:  Some guests have been waiting for a while:  It's never easy to catch on camera the first look:  Maneesh has got this:  The Anand Karaj ends with gifts...
