Naf & Aleem - Ismaili Pre-wedding Rituals in Edmonton
The Ismaili wedding ceremonies last about 4 days and everything is showered with flower petals.
The colourful glitter is added to the mehndi design solely for picture purposes.
Something like this:
Shyna, the bride's sister is bringing holy water from jamatkhana:
In order to maintain the purity of the water, she's not allowed to speak or even smile before she hands the gari over to the bride's mother:
Not such an easy task because she wants hard cash in exchange:
During the Mandhvo, four uncles bring pineapples to the bride's house and place them in the four corners of the room.
It's a known fact that evil doesn't like pineapples and it will not enter the premises.
However, now it's very safe for the bride to show up:
A similar story unfolds at the groom's place:
Aleem's sisters bring the gari with holy water:
Winning:
The area is secured in the same way, with the pineapples' help:
A paste made of chickpea flour, turmeric and oils is rubbed onto Aleem's skin:
The pithi ceremony is a joyful occasion and everybody has to pay for the opportunity to be a part of it:
It's worth every cent:
For the second part of the pithi, thevictim, I mean the groom to be is slipping in something more uncomfortable:
He didn't really like cilantro before, but he sure is going to hate it from here on:
Qahir, the best man, is taking some of the heat, or, in this case, whipped cream:
Missed a spot there:
Aaa, never mind:
The feet deserve attention, too:
And just when you think it can't get any worse:
Nothing like a shower at sunset:
Sapatia is a small clay pot containing different symbolic elements:
Aleem must break it by stepping on it, thereby releasing the gifts inside. This is, in fact, practice for the big one in the wedding day, when he'll compete with his bride for the title of household ruler:
The Puro ceremony takes place the next day, at the Palace Banquet hall:
The groom's family brings gifts for the bride to welcome her to the family. The trousseau trays are carried by Aleem's sisters and female cousins:
They are greeted and blesses by the bride's mother:
Aleem brings flowers for his future wife:
Finally, Nafilia makes her way in:
There's one more obstacle in their way:
Nothing that can't be fixed with some gifts:
The couple takes their seat surrounded by exquisite paper flowers:
The gifts keep pouring:
Quality entertainment is one of them:
Something is rising. It's the anticipation level for the wedding day.
Stick around.
